| At the age of 5 and 6, music is a total experience for the child. Thus, Orff emphasizes a variety of skills, including pitch awareness, auditory discrimination, the development of rhythm through speech and movement, and of melody through simple songs and singing games. In this class we will incorporate speech (rhymes, poems, stories), singing (games, action songs, folk materials), movement, dance, body percussion (clapping, patschen, stamping), pitched instruments |

| What is Orff-Schulwerk? The
Orff method, also known as Orff-Schulwerk or Music for Children, is an
approach to music education conceived by the German composer Carl Orff
(1895-1982). It was developed in the 1920s and 1930s while Orff was
music director of the Günther-Schule, a school of dance and music in
Munich. Orff's approach, was based on his belief that the easiest
method of teaching music is to draw out the student's inherent
affinities for rhythm and melody and allow these to develop in natural
ways, leading the child by his or her intuition from primitive to more
sophisticated expression through stages parallel to western music's
evolution. Orff accomplishes this by means of a carefully planned
program, beginning with speech patterns, rhythmic movement, and
two-note tunes, then moving logically into pentatonic melody. Adult
pressure and mechanical drill are discouraged. Improvisation is
encouraged. Major and minor melody are introduced as the final stage of
the program. Orff designed a special group of instruments, including
glockenspiels, xylophones, metallophones, drums, and other percussion
instruments to fulfill the requirements of the Schulwerk courses. |
Music Together®, 3's & 4's
| In this very special Music
Together class for 3- and 4-year-olds, kids take on a larger role in
shaping the class by creating their own rhythm patterns, making up
verses, and participating in new and amazing 3-and- 4-year-old ways.
The class runs as part of our Music Together® session on Mondays at 4pm (Sarah Peters). Your 3s and 4s also make great leaders in our mixed-age Music Together classes. Please browse the Music Together links at the left for more information. | ![]() |
